SlipStream Web Acceleration technology speeds up your Internet experience, by up to five times, using your existing dialup phone line and modem. You do not require any extra equipment. SlipStream allows you to surf at near DSL speed, making SlipStream the high-speed Internet solution with the convenience of dial-up. It is easy to install, runs seamlessly and doesn't alter any of your existing software. You can also control the amount of compression vs.speed gain yourself. This is the same type of software that other large competitors such as NetZero and Earthlink use as an upsell to their customer base. We are now providing you with the opportunity to have this same technology at a very low additional cost. 

What gets accelerated?

SlipStream compresses the following elements of web pages in order to send the information to your computer faster:

  • Web pages - HTML markup and JavaScript
  • Graphics including JPEG and GIF images
  • Text
  • E-mail on the Web

What will not be accelerated?

Although SlipStream is able to compress many different types of online data, there are a few which cannot be accelerated:

  • Streaming media, audio and video files
  • Secure pages, such as those used for online banking and credit card forms
  • Files and attachments such as music or digital photos.

How does it work?

With traditional dialup methods, the text and graphics that make up Web pages get sent from the server to you over your phone line. Because of the large amount of data required to be sent, this process can be painfully slow. SlipStream compresses this data using a proprietary technology, and sends it over your existing dialup phone line. This compression process allows a smaller amount data to be sent – up to six times less – making the download time of your web pages and your online experience that much faster. As an added download time reducer, SlipStream stores elements of the Web sites you visit frequently so you do not have to re-download them every time you visit these sites.

SlipStream System Requirements

  • Dialup Internet Connection (We now offer SlipStream even if you use a competitors dial up internet service! Although we know you would be happier as a pup in mydoghouse.)
  • Supported Internet Browser:
    IE 5+ or Netscape Navigator 4.7 +.
    Opera or Mozilla require additional configuration.
  • Windows OS:
    Pentium PC 200MHz or better with Windows 98, ME, 2000, or XP
    (Apple...Mac and Linux are currently not supported).
  • Available Disk space: 5 MB
  • System Memory (RAM): 64 MB of RAM recommended

  1. How does SlipStream Web Accelerator work?

    SlipStream accelerates your internet access through proprietary text and image compression, content caching and other network optimizations.

  2. Will I benefit from using SlipStream Web Accelerator?

    If you have a slow internet connection (such as a dialup or wireless connection) with bandwidth of less than 300Kbps, you will experience a significant degree of acceleration using SlipStream.

  3. What types of content does SlipStream Web Accelerator speedup?

    The SlipStream Web Accelerator significantly speeds up web page access.  To achieve this speedup, proprietary lossless compression is applied to text, html, xml, javascript and style sheets.  Proprietary image compression is applied to gif images, jpeg images and Flash content.

    SlipStream also accelerates email traffic (POP3 and SMTP) using lossless compression.

    SlipStream does NOT speedup file downloads (over FTP or file sharing programs), streaming audio/video and HTTPS (secure websites).

2. Using SlipStream Web Accelerator

  1. How do I start the SlipStream Web Accelerator?

    The SlipStream Web Accelerator is launched automatically every time windows starts. You do not have to launch it manually.

    A SlipStream Web Accelerator icon appears in the Windows system tray to show that it is operating in the background.

  2. How do I change the image quality for a particular image?

    Right-clicking on an image within Internet Explorer and selecting "Show Original Image" allows you to view the original image.  Selecting "Show All Original Images" allows you to view all original images in the entire web page.

  3. How do I change the image quality setting for all images?

    Right-click on the SlipStream Web Accelerator taskbar icon and select "Settings". Select the "Image Quality" tab. Adjust the slider bar to the desired image quality setting. Press OK to save the changes.

  1. How do I use Internet Explorer with SlipStream Web Accelerator?

    Internet Explorer is automatically configured to use the SlipStream Web Accelerator.  Use Internet Explorer as you normally would.

  2. How do I use other browsers with SlipStream Web Accelerator?

    Netscape Navigator is automatically configured to use the SlipStream Web Accelerator.  Use Netscape as you normally would.

    For other browsers such as Opera and Mozilla, SlipStream Web Accelerator works with any web browser that allows you to specify an HTTP proxy. You must set the HTTP proxy host to be "127.0.0.1" and the port number to be the local listening port of the SlipStream Client (5400 by default). Consult your browser's documentation for information on how this can be done.

  3. Does SlipStream Web Accelerator speed up email access?

    Yes, SlipStream automatically accelerates your email traffic (POP3 and SMTP) for all popular email clients such as Eudora, Outlook, Outlook Express and Netscape Mail.  Other email clients should work transparently as well.

  6. Does SlipStream Web Accelerator speed-up my secure (HTTPS) transactions such as web-banking?

    The SlipStream Web Accelerator does not accelerate secure transactions. Secure websites will continue to work by bypassing the acceleration component. If you have a Secure application that you would like accelerated, inquire about the SlipStream Secure product.

  7. What operating systems can SlipStream Web Accelerator be installed on?

    SlipStream Web Accelerator can be installed on any of the following operating systems:

    • Windows 95b w/ Winsock2
    • Windows 98
    • Windows 98SE
    • Windows Millennium Edition (Windows ME)
    • Windows NT 4.0
    • Windows 2000
    • Windows XP 

    SlipStream Web Accelerator requires at least Internet Explorer 4.0 and Netscape 4.0 or any later version of either browser.

    Note that the SlipStream Email Acceleration component requires Windows 98 and above, and that the SlipStream Popup-Blocker component requires Internet Explorer 5.0 and above.

    Newer versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer are available for free through Microsoft.

    ForWindows 95 users: Currently, Microsoft does not permit Windows 95 users to install Internet Explorer 6 or greater, however Internet Explorer 5.5 is available.

  8. What system requirements are necessary to use SlipStream Web Accelerator?

    The recommended system requirements for the SlipStream Web Accelerator are a Pentium 200MHz with 64MB of RAM and at least 5 MB of hard-disk space.

    Regardless, SlipStream Web Accelerator will work within your current system configuration to provide you with the best content acceleration.
